JunoActive Fabrics

JunoActive carefully chooses its fabrics. That’s the main reason our products last so long, feel great on the body, and make activity such a joy. We always look for the latest in fabric technology that will keep you comfortable doing your favorite activity.

Fabric Fiber Types

Plant-based fibers: In this group include cotton, rayon, tencel, and bamboo. Some fabrics absorb more than others. Ccotton is the champion water absorber. That’s why it makes great towels and feels wonderful on the skin when dry. When these fibers become saturated they no longer breathe, and they take a long time to dry. Cotton is not advised as a first layer for extreme conditions for this reason. A wet tee shirt can lead to hypothermia in cold temperatures, and can lead to overheating in extremely hot situations, like Hot-Yoga.

Animal-based fibers: In this group include wool, alpaca, cashmere, and silk. This group also absorbs moisture, but they continue to insulate and breathe even when wet, making them good for some outdoors applications. But they also take a long time to dry and can stretch out when wet, although they will generally keep their strength. They can also shrink significantly under certain wet and warm conditions.

Hydrophilic (water-loving) fibers: These have a luxurious, warm feel. They are very breathable when dry. They mix well with other fibers including synthetics like Spandex for stretch, and polyester for lightness, strength, and faster drying.

JunoActive fabrics that are hydrophilic (water-loving) include our JunoActive Stretch Naturals with 90% cotton, 10% spandex blend. These shirts, leggings, bra tops and more are perfect for both casual wear, and athletic wear for aerobic classes, yoga workouts and walking. These are situations where you will sweat and then take off your clothes, shower and put on your street clothes, or in the case of walking, where you will sweat, but not that much, never saturating your clothing. These have high value because they easily cross over into your casual life, making these best selling favorites. In addition, we garment dye these pieces for a super-soft almost brushed feel that is wonderful to wear. Other water-loving fabrics we use are recall denims with 95% cotton/5% spandex, and our heavy super jersey, French Knits and flannel fabrics with 100% cotton.

Hydrophobic (Water-hating) fibers:These groups of fabrics, the water-hating hydrophobic ones, (you can say these fibers have a water phobia!) do not absorb much water, and when they do they shed it as quickly as possible Think water off a duck’s back. These would not make good rags! They just don’t absorb much.

Fabric innovation has created some amazing water-hating fibers that function in really neat ways. The fiber itself is made from man-made materials, like polyester and nylon, or even more esoteric fibers such as polypropylene. Some of these materials are the same things used to make other products, most notably plastic water bottles, so often fibers are from recycled materials.

These amazing fibers are not the old simple round fibers of polyester suits or hot nylon shirts. These new fibers are created with machines that create not round fibers, but fibers that are designed with fuzzy surfaces with short little fibers that can catch and hold moisture and then release it very quickly. This also makes these new fibers feel and act more like natural fibers. But the base material still hates water, so as you sweat is disperses the moisture very quickly trying to she itself have the water, and therefore it dries fast, often while you are wearing it.

Many of these fibers also react to heat, so that as you warm up in a workout, the water is pushed to the outside where it can dry. That’s why these items can feel warmer as you start a workout, and then start to give you a cooling sensation as moisture moves away from your body.

These fabrics make great first layers. Fuzzy fabrics from these fibers make great second layers because they will trap the air yet allow air movement. They will keep you drier under extreme temps when you are working up a sweat, so they are great for fast walking, jogging, cross country skiing, camping. They are also lightweight.

They are also great travel companions because of their lightweight, strong and fast drying natures. When woven, these fibers can keep out the rain while still allowing the fabric to breathe. New knitting and bonding techniques also allow fabrics to be combined for special uses.

Popular Juno Active fabrics in this group include our signature QuikWik® fabrics. We love the super-stretchy and matte appeal. Also our breathable and brushed Nylon, the QuikCool® base layer, and out PerfecTemp fleece.

Swimwear Fabrics

Technology has also entered the swimwear world. The biggest change has been in chlorine resistant fabrics.

For years companies kept looking for better and better spandex. We use the very best chlorine resistant spandex in the market in our Nylon/Lycra swimwear. We also use a higher-content spandex. This make s beautiful fabric with excellent control and re-bound. We love the look and feel of these suits, and their lifespan is well above average.

However, our lap swimmers really wanted a suit that just wouldn’t die in chlorine, and we found AquaSport, our fabric that has NO spandex. The technology has finally created excellent polyester fabric with a luxurious feel, that has what is called “mechanical stretch” to give a lovely fit to these swimsuits. Not as controlling, but these suits have an amazingly long life span. We joke here at Junonia that you will want a new suit before you suit wears out, just to have something new to wear!

Fabric Care

At JunoActive we choose fabrics for long-term value. That means they wash beautifully and are easy to take care of. We choose fabrics with low shrinkage expected when washed, and colors that stay bright. We specify the best threads and zippers so they last as long as the fabric.

We are clear in our care instructions, so if we say avoid heat, it’s important to do that. But most fabrics need only to be machine washed and low temperature machine dried. Occasionally something needs line drying, but we’ll tell you on the care label.

Swimwear care is actually simpler than most people think. We do sell a suit solution to reduce the chlorine impact, but for most people, quickly rinsing suits in cold water after a swim, wrapping in a towel to gently press out most of the water, and line drying someplace cool and shady, will make for a suit you’ll enjoy for a long time. We don’t recommend detergents, Woolite, spinners or wringing out a suit. Do not leave a suit in a hot car or in the sun. Dry Nylon/Spandex suits completely between uses to allow a full rebound effect. There is almost nothing you can do to hurt an AquaSport suit, so order one today—or two, so you have one ready to toss in your suitcase.
