It's the beginning of the year, and for the physically unmotivated "like me" the pressure is on! I find staying on a schedule nearly impossible. I don't know it's due to my lazy nature, my distracted mind, or my favorite theory... genetics. I'd love to be in better shape, but I don't seem to be able to do it all on my own. So what do people like me do?
1. Find a group to join! Groups can be tiny or large, but they are a great boost to the motivation. Whether it's a self-made group of you and a friend, meeting on the corner at 6 am for a brisk morning walk, or a big, friendly, aquacizing group in the pool, there is a group for everyone. Sometimes people who are out of shape or larger are shy about joining a group. Don't be! In the first class or two you'll be huffing and puffing more than the rest, but you'll be amazed how quickly your body will adjust and by the third or fourth class you'll be right in there with the rest! Trust me on that. (Be sure and get a medical OK from your doc, and always work in your own comfort zone.)
2. Find an animal If you find the right animal partner who shares your passion for: walking, skijoring, ball throwing, jogging, biking, hiking, horseback riding, or games you'll always know that your friend is waiting with a wagging tail or whinney. Remember, there are lots of pets that belong to OTHER people that would love to be your exercise partner, so don't feel you need to own one to use one.
3. Find a trainer Yes, personal trainers can be expensive, but they can be a great way to get into new activities, or to ramp up to another level. We all need to learn new moves and get new inspiration. If you and your trainer don't hit it off, don't waste your precious time. Say, thank you and find another. Remember, you are buying motivation as much as information. Don't be embarrassed. Chemistry between people is a mystery!
4. Find Support and Have Fun So now you have yourself motivated with a group, an animal, or a trainer, or some other thing that works for you. Don't let those curmudgeons around you get in your way! You need to surround yourself with positive people who will cheer you on. You deserve that! So leave the demanding kids, uncommunicative teen or bemused spouse and gather your friends once a week at the local tea shop for a few laughs. If you can't get out start a telephone tree, or an email list, to share good thoughts. Take the lead and organize an event every other month for a few of your favorite people. It doesn't even have to be fitness focused; just make sure the purpose is to celebrate and have fun. Jimmy Carter has a new book. The theme is to enjoy your life. He regrets that it took him so long to really learn to have fun. By nature he is such a serious guy. And now here he is in his eighties, doing some of the most serious humanitarian work of his entire life, and he's having a ball. Now that's motivating!
